SoÂ…the Oberhausen concert is already two days ago and the Frankfurt concert even longer, so I think itÂ’s time to organize my thoughts about the ab-so-lu-te-ly brilliant performances! ButÂ…there is so much that caught my attention while watching and listening, that it is very hard to write a coherent story. So here some of my thoughtsÂ…
The songs...
I always find it very hard to think of favorite DL-songs (I like almost all equally) and the same goes for these concerts. But I think The following songs surprised me the most, so IÂ’ll call them my favorites: Into my arms, Mirror Men and Reincarnation.
I also have a least favorite song in these concerts: Dark Star. Let me explain. I told a friend of minde DL was going to play with an orchestra and he commented. ‘So the music will be more bombastic then it already is?Â’ With other musicians, that would be very likely. But in the case of Deine Lakaien (or should I say Ernst his arrangements), this (of course 🙂) did not happen. Except with Dark Star, IMHO. It became exactly what I would expect thinking about a orchestral version of it. So it wasnÂ’t a real surprise, I didnÂ’t find it as creative and surprising as I found the other songs.
I mean, I only recognised Into my arms when Alexander started singing ;-). What a sursprise! And how beautiful! In a reaction to the Stuttgart concert, Chris said she thought the version too light. I for one have a totally different opinion: I just love the more lighter, more surprising orchestral versions.
Same for Mirror Men. IÂ’m not very into that song (but I do think itÂ’s magnificent to watch Ernst play it acoustically!), I thinkÂ’s itÂ’s a bit too agressive, loud and fast. But with the orchestraÂ…I was bedazzled! The version was slower, more subtle, but heavy where I was needed. And the orchestral sounds at some pointsÂ…the tapping of strings etc: wow, what a great idea to use that in a song!
And for Reincarnation: what cool to use different instruments, including voices, to do the dupdupdup-thingÂ…
Sound quality
About the quality of sound: I really think at matters where you are sitting. In Frankfurt, I sat in the middle, 12th row and couldnÂ’t hear any of the enthousiastic playing of Robert. In Oberhausen, I sat left of the stage (Block 1, Reihe A) and could hear RobertÂ’s playing very well! Otherwise, the sound was perfect in both places. I heard all kinds of wonderful details : pleased:
The looks
And what I just love to see: the way Ernst looks when he finishes a song: so very satisfied and happy! And another thing: after almost each song Ernst and Alexander look at eachother to give their opinions about the way the songs was played – at least, that’s what it looks like. They looked satisfied at all songs. Well almost: In Oberhausen, the looks they exchanged after Nobody’s wounded were less enthousiastic. It was also one of the very few times I heard Alexander start a line to early ;-)
The voice
I think Alexanders singing has improved much over the years. The way he sings now compared to performances in 90's...To me it looks like he is more at ease, more relaxed these days at the stage, more relaxed than before. Think of the concert that never happened before, the Berlin show last year, these concertsÂ… It is more a feeling I have than a fact, but still...
After the shows
And after the show in Frankfurt someone tapped me on the back. I turned around and someone asked 'Are you Lokje?' Fun to be recognised 🙂 It were Daniela and Queeny. I remember seeing them at other concerts, but we never introduced ourselves. After that it was time to see if we could find Obscure, also known as 'the Australian guy' 😛 or Don. And we did! We chatted for a while and then we had to get out of the Alte Oper. Don, me and my friend Erik wanted to have drink, but we couldn't find a bar that was still open... So Erik and I walked Don to the Hauptbahnhof and went back to the hotel. Finally something to drink again 🙂
And in Oberhausen we saw Daniela and Queeny again, and later on Theris and Snails & Slati. Very nice to meet you all!
And last but not least...
Ernst, thanks for the beautiful arrangements! So incredible that after all these years and all the different arrangements for the same songs, you still manage to come up with completely different, new things. Alexander, thanks for the beautiful way you bring the songs. I can't imagine I'll ever get tired of hearing you sing. And Sharifa, Ivee, B.Deutung, Robert and the Neue Philharmonie: wow! What a great performance! Thank you for the great nights!

PS: Sorry for the English, I hope you don't mind...Since here are all reactions to the concerts and not in the English forum, I thought it was best to post it here.
